FAMILY follows four fierce women as they navigate the pussies, parties and potlucks in New York City’s queerest borough, Brooklyn.
It is a crucial time at 195 Lewis. Ambitious entrepreneur, Yuri Battle struggles to balance the grind of propelling her career as an artist and the kinks of her polyamorous relationship. Yuri’s longtime girlfriend, Camille Darby is currently unemployed and busies herself with retail therapy while ensuring that her smart-ass little sister, Staceyanne, doesn’t let any yellow dresses distract her from graduation. It’s just another Paper Over Pussy party at one-nine-five when Yuri’s college friend, Kris Wilkerson, pops up on her stoop…
Join Yuri, Camille, Staceyanne and Kris as they confront the challenges of work, womanhood and the world while redefining what it means to be FAMILY.
YURI* (27), 5’9” African-American; mature and extremely independent; masculine-of-center presenting with a touch of femininity; ridiculous swag; moved to Brooklyn after graduating from Howard University. Yuri struggles to balance work, home, and her new lover. The arrival of college friend Kris brings more secrets to the surface. But it’s okay - Yuri has it all under control.
Sign: Aries Favorite Book: Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Ritual: Bike riding Medicine: Camille.
CAMILLE* (29). 5’8” second generation Bajan-American; grew up in Flatbush with upwardly mobile parents; femme fashionista; will get upset if you ask her to take off her shoes in an apartment because it sets off her entire outfit BUT will ask the same of you when entering her home. This Brooklyn native is no dummy, but even with a PhD. in Caribbean Literature, the job search is taking much longer than expected. With Yuri being home less and less, Camille begins to question just how poly she really is.
Sign: Scorpio. Ritual: Fine Baths & Manicures. Medicine: Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
KRIS (25), 5’7” African-American; Vegan enthusiast, Dallas native; doesn’t know if she wants to present masculine or feminine. We see her develop her own sense of self/style. After moving to Brooklyn with just a dream and bookbag, Kris relies on her old friend, Yuri, to get adjusted. In BK, Kris looks for work, love and herself while finding some new friends along the way.
Sign: Aquarius. Ritual: Herb. Favorite Book: The Notebook. Medicine: Forgetting.
STACEYANNE or “ANNE”, (20), 5’5” Bajan-American; baby AG; gets at as many attractive women as possible; rejects serious relationships and has never been in love; always mooching off her older sister, Camille. The tatted up co-ed only has one semester between her and a bachelor’s degree. After an STD scare, she challenges herself to celibacy… For real this time! Comediennes encouraged!
Sign: Gemini. Ritual: Tattoos & Piercings. Favorite Book: Wildseed. Medicine: Herb
Sierra, (27). This Philly-born, round-the-way girl went to Howard with Yuri and Kris. She and Yuri both pledged Delta together, and are now business partners at POP, a company description. She’s a spiritual healer, proud bisexual, and businesswoman. Curvy, adorned, and sexually uninhibited.
Nia, (34). We don’t know where Nia’s from. All we know is that she’s older, chivalrous, and has a crush on Kris. The air force recruiter always seems to be in the right place, at the right time.
Harlem, (late 20s/early 30s). One word: Bad.
